Dave Burrell: Syllables of the Poetry of Marianne Moore

Dave Burrell: Syllables of the Poetry of Marianne Moore

I love when creative people and organizations team-up to do something one of a kind. I find it even more enjoyable and special when it only happens in Philly. Take for example the performance triumvirate of Rosenbach/Burrell/Moore, running tonight (February 20th) and on February 23rd.

Player #1: The Rosenbach Museum and Library is one of Philadelphia’s most prized and unique collections of rare books, manuscripts, furniture, and art. The museum strives to commission creators and collaborators to bring to life their collections through a variety of ways such as: a musician-in-residence program with Dave Burrell.

Player #2: Dave Burrell is one of Philadelphia’s top jazz pianists. He is a Pew Fellowship recipient, Steinway representative, High Two recording artist and legendary musician. Burrell has tackled previous commissions from the Rosenbach including Bill of Sale for a Slave, inspired by the museum’s African American collections. For these late February concerts Burrell has intimately studied the work and life of poet Marianne Moore.

Player #3: Marianne Moore was a Modernist American poet and writer and a central figure in New York Modernism. Burrell has deconstructed and re-composed four of Moore’s poems down to the syllable. The museum houses an obsessive collection of her poetry drafts, correspondence, unpublished memoirs, a library of her personally inscribed and annotated books from friends (most of them also famous poets) and even recreation of Moore’s living room.
