How the Turtle Got its Shell: Wagner Free Institute

How the Turtle Got its Shell: Wagner Free Institute (Feb 27th)

On Wednesday Feb 27th, esteemed evolutionary developmental biologist Dr. Scott Gilbert and “Team Turtle” from Swarthmore College will present their new and recently published hypothesis for how the turtle shell forms.

Dr. Gilbert will present that the turtle’s skeleton in unique among vertebrates”"no other has a casing made almost exclusively of bone. He will describe the principles of “evo devo” biology and how it can explain the formation of novel body plans.

It’s funny I used to have a turtle named Gilbert! If you want to see turtles in the wild in Philadelphia, I’d suggest the “Bio Pond” at the University of Pennsylvania or John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum where seven species of turtle can be seen.

I won’t be able to make it, but it sounds like a lot of fun. I sure do love stinkpots – nice choice for the photo.
