My wife and I went out for a hot date the other night to the North Star bar, to see internet legend and YouTube superstar, Leslie Hall. Leslie is a comedienne, rappin’ funkmaster, thrift shop culture dynamo, pop style gleaner and full-on Waring blender of all those elements.

She’s a big girl and she celebrates that, in your face, with stretch gold lame’ outfits and ferociously funny bumpin’ booty and belly shakin’. She’s from Iowa, and her stage persona, as carefully crafted as Pee Wee Herman’s, takes the worst of that Mid West style, in hair and glasses and make up, and wields it like Conan swings an axe. The packed audience was howling and shrieking with a genuine glee that was all the more exciting because we were all so WITH her, on her side, celebrating all that she so joyously skewered.

She was flanked by her back up singers / performers / costume change enablers, The Ly’s.

The obscure motorhome from the early 70s that she’s transformed into a museum dedicated to gem sweaters is a Starcraft Starcruiser. We’re restoring one locally, and it looks like something Bootsy should step out of, stage smoke and all, every time the door opens!
