The Academy of Natural Sciences Plan One Hair-Raising Weekend

The Academy of Natural Sciences Plan One Hair-Raising Weekend

Not sure who you’re voting for yet? That’s okay, neither am I. In fact, I’m always in a constant state of indecision when it comes to politics. It’s never easy to pick a candidate, and it never will be… at least, until Bruce Springsteen decides to run. Springsteen in 2012!

The Academy of Natural Sciences has planned a unique way to help you celebrate Presidents Day, and give your mind a rest from all this political business. From Saturday through Monday, February 16th, 17th, and 18th, the Academy will have an incredibly rare artifact on display from its collections… an album of hair from the first twelve United States presidents.

You heard me.

The scrapbook contains locks of hair from George Washington to Martin Van Buren. Contained in the scrapbook are letters detailing how the hair was obtained and by whom.

Interesting story, the album is one of twelve volumes collected by a native Philadelphian, Peter Arvell Browne, a lawyer who contributed a lot to the Academy. One of these albums includes hair from other famous people, include Napolean Bonaparte!

Also on display, will be some of the fossils collected by Thomas Jefferson that he left to the Academy.

So pay the Academy a visit! For more information, check out their official website.
