The most resonating image of Philadelphia that I carried around throughout my childhood in Maryland was that surprising and stunning panoply of mosaics that enliven South Street and its environs. So I can’t wait to see the movie “In a Dream,” the story of the muralist, Isaiah Zagar, and his wife, Julia, as directed by their son, Jeremiah, when it plays at the International House and Ritz East Theater 2 during the Philadelphia Film Festival on April 4th and 5th.

“In a Dream” is one of 260 films officially announced Tuesday night that will comprise the lineup of this year’s Philly film fest. The festival, which runs from April 3-15, 2008, will showcase movies in a variety of genres from 49 countries. And while the treasured “Festival of Independents” is a forum specifically designed to highlight local films, several Philadelphia-area directors will be showing their work in the general festival, alongside competitors from around the world.

For example, “Land of Confusion” takes viewers on a journey from Pennsylvania to Iraq through the lens of PA National Guardsman Jeremy Zerechak, who interviews both Americans and Iraqis who express their frustration with the regime–both past and present. This documentary screens at the I-House on April 13th.

Proving the range of topics in this year’s doc entries, “Eleven Minutes” consumes itself with fashion–directed by Michael Selditch, “Eleven Minutes” follows “Project Runway’s” Jay McCarroll as he dramatically and comedically prepares to launch his own clothing line. This screens at the Prince Music Theater April 5th and 7th.

And “Holler Back – (Not) Voting in an American Town” travels to Allentown during the 2004 presidential race to find out why young Americans are just so darn frustrated with our political system. This world premiere, directed by Lulu Fries’dat, screens April 12th at the Black Box at the Prince.

Isaiah himself is a dream… such a Philadelphia gem. We’re lucky to have him here.
