Dining: Try the Empanadas!

With all the Frida Kahlo hype going around town, I decided to do a little research on fine dining. However, although there’s so much to go around, where can I get empanadas?!
Let’s see, how do you describe that delicious, wonderful empanada which in English actually translates to pie? There are so many varieties of empanadas; some of which even I didn’t know existed. My original though was that a typical empanada was just beef or chicken (both splendid by the way). But let’s take a look around Philadelphia and see where you can get these wonderful creations!
“¢ Tierra Colombiana located at 4535 N. 5th Street has what I like to call the original empanadas which include beef, chicken and shrimp. Served at any time, these will run you about $1 each.

“¢ Let’s go to the Center City district and stop by Mixto (also owned by the same people as Tierra Colombiana). Mixto sells delicious cheese, chicken, beef, shrimp and even crabmeat empanadas which will run any where around $4 – $6.

“¢ Alma de Cuba, located at 1623 Walnut Street, serves delicious empanadas de verde. These beef patties are a mix of spinach and manchego cheese with artichoke. Remember, that empanadas are universal in the Latino world!

“¢ Our next Cuban cuisine spot is Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar located at 10 S. 2nd Street. I’ll give it to them; their rum hits the spot, but right before you drink, try their Tres Amigos “” a combo of three empanadas. You can choose from the following: beef picadillo, olives & raisins; Chicken, corn & Jack cheese; Pulled pork, roasted poblano & charred tomatoes; or Baby spinach salad, tomatillo relish with goat cheese ranch dressing. Finally for desert, try the empanaditas de manzana (apple). These patties are mixed with green apple slaw and spiced cream dipping sauce. Yum!

“¢ Our last stop takes us to Tequilas Restaurant, 1602 Locust Street. This Mexican-themed restaurant always has the empanada del dia (beef patty of the day). Their empanadas are mixed with corn tortillas filled with the freshest ingredients selected each day by the chef.

With that said I’m sure you are all going to run to get a bite to eat. Enjoy and don’t forget to order an empanada, not a beef patty. Gracias!

Hello,
Just trying to get the word out… Arbol Cafe makes baked beef and vegetarian empanadas. If you want to try a completely fresh and tasty empanada, we invite you to give Arbol a try. These Paraguayan empanadas are big and because they are baked, they are not greasy at all.
Sorry to self promote, but I know people are always looking for a good empanada!
Happy Hunting,
Arbol Cafe
