This paint-your-own pottery boutique, that opened on Martin Luther King Day of 2008, is a pottery studio and learning center for American Sign Language. Most fun is the ability to walk in and make your own one-of-a-kind pottery keepsake. With a $7 studio fee (half off on Thursdays and two for one on Saturdays during certain hours) and pottery priced from $5-$30 a-la-carte, you can spend hours painting your own personalized masterpiece no matter what your age. Let them do the dirty work of firing and glazing and pick up your creation in a week.

The Expressive Hand is a perfect spot for parties and workshops with space to accommodate up to 20 people. Sign-Me-A-Story painting event happens every Wednesday morning with children’s story read aloud and signed with the opportunity for kids to paint their favorite characters. ASL classes and workshops are offered for babies, children and adults. The Expressive Hand also has a summer camp for kids in July and August, after school classes on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and opportunities for fund-raisers and auctions.

About the Blogger

I'm a recent post graduate teacher now working in arts administration among 1,000 other odd jobs (like a record label, theater management, free-lance photography/faux-journalism/faux-modeling, and faux-rock star). I love taking advantage of every dinning, and weirdo arts/music thing I can find to entertain myself in this fine city. I currently reside on South Street where I plan to live for the rest of my life or until my rent gets too high, the latter more likely to happen very soon.

Don’t take your family here. I love the idea of these places! But this one is over priced and poorly run compared to other paint your own pottery studios I’ve been too. I really stopped going because I noticed how every time I’d come in they would break someones piece or it would break in the kiln. So be warned!

The place is awesome! It’s one of the cheaper one’s I’ve been to. You can stay for hours and not watch the clock! It’s a beautiful relaxing place and lots of fun! The owner is a doll and the employess are very helpful!

I just took my family here and the kids had a blast! It’s so much better than taking them to a two hour movie and blowing all our money on popcorn with nothing to look forward to afterwards. With pottery painting we have mugs & plates we can use forever with a personal touch!
