Headhouse Square Farmer’s Market is Back

By Kelly White

Our city has a love affair with farmer’s markets, that’s no lie. Given the abundance of fresh produce stands during warm months, none are as diverse as the Headhouse Square Market. It’s easy to forget you’re in the city with the selection of farmers and artisans who set up their stalls. With pickings so thoughtfully grown, created and sold, how could you not skip the line at the big-box store? Being face-to-face with the person who is directly responsible for your food is comforting.

Headhouse’s open-air market combines some of the most in-demand purveyors from our area, with their freshest regional specialties. This year’s most sought-after stands include Talula’s Table, a widely popular market and restaurant. Why wait for reservations at their Kennett Square location when their sausages, pates and prepared foods are up for tasting at your own table? Gourmands are also clamoring over Los Taquitos de Puebla, which brings tacos al pastor to the market grounds for those who require more than cheese samples.

Those cheese tide-overs no doubt come from Birchrun Hills Farm, revered for their creamy Birchrun Blue and Highland Alpine mountain-style cheeses. The localicious Bobbi’s Hummus dole out garlic breath nearby, fresh pot pies await in boxes from Griggstown Quail Farm & Market, and sticky buns? They’re everywhere, doused with nuts and acres of honey, gently reminding you to pick up some white asparagus and heirloom tomatoes from the next vendor, so that you can eat more righteously later.

Headhouse Square Farmers Market is every Sunday from 10 AM-2 PM. Saturdays start on May 17.
