Summer Solstice Celebration at the Kimmel Center

Post by Benjamin Gilbert
Looking for a uniquely Philadelphia way to celebrate the Summer Solstice this year? The Kimmel Center’s got you covered! Between 3 p.m. and dawn on Saturday June 21st, the acclaimed concert hall will host the “Summer Solstice Celebration“, a menagerie of events ranging from InLiquid’s Art for the Cash Poor art sale to Gamervision’s virtual Nintendo Wii bowling alley.
During the day, family events abound, with Philly-based family dance phenomenon “Baby Loves Disco” bringing an afternoon of the ’70s and ’80s disco hits, and thusly providing a chance for children and parents to enjoy anachronistic hilarity together. Rounding out the afternoon is D/2 and D/3, the youth and apprentice companies (respectively) to PHILADANCO, Philadelphia’s premiere modern contemporary dance company (and resident company of The Kimmel Center) will put on a child-friendly performance that will be sure to please all ages.
Later on in the evening, guests can rock out to The Brakes in the Verizon Hall or samba dance across the Perelman Theater to the sultry sounds of the Johnny Cruz Latin Jazz Ensemble. Maybe you’re an old hand at melting human faces with plastic guitars? Good thing a Guitar Hero 3 tournament kicks off at midnight, just a few hours before Arabic Rhythms by Joseph Tayoun with Al-Bustan and the Seeds of Culture will lead the audience in Commonwealth Plaza in a sunrise drum circle — but beware, this is a B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Drum) situation.
Tickets are available now online as well as at the door. At $10 for adults and $5 for children (12 and under), Summer Solstice at the Kimmel Center offers a full days worth of entertainment for very reasonable rates.
