A Great Afternoon in Town: Some Photos

Just the other week I had a 2:30 afternoon meeting at Nodding Head regarding next year’s Philly Beer Week. I gave myself a lot of time and decided to make an afternoon of it. It was a beautiful summer day, sunny, not humid, and only a tiny bit hot. Just a perfect summer day. Rather than take the 66 from work to the Frankford Transportation Center, I opted to street hike the mile and half down Frankford Avenue. My first stop downtown was a trip through the somewhat recently remodeled concourse. It has changed a lot since I had a cubicle job downtown.

I passed through the just opened Market at The Comcast Center and up into the lobby of The Comcast Center. I wanted to check out their new fangled super-high-definition video wall. Hot dang! That thing is cool! Part technological marvel, part art, all cool.

The screen, which is 83 feet long and 25 feet high, looks like the rest of the wood panelled lobby. That is until vivid images of people and things start moving around the wall. While this YouTube video captures one of the sequences really well, I recommend seeing it in person.

Then I headed to Joe’s Pizza for lunch. Whenever I find myself west of Broad around lunchtime, I always get lunch at Joe’s. They have some of the best slices in the city. The other Joes are OK, but the original Joe’s on 16th, just below Samson, is easily the best. Despite not being a regular for several years, Vito recognized me and got me old usual.

I still had about 15 minutes before the meeting, so I popped over to DiBrunos at 18th and Chestnut for some cheese. I spent quite a few minutes lingering over the numerous wonderful choices. I settled on three types, none of which I was familiar with. All were in vacuum sealed packages, which didn’t need to be kept refrigerated until I could get them home. All three were incredible, by the way.

In case you don’t already know, Philadelphia is one of the world’s best cities for beer. It was a great meeting, a real who’s who of the Philadelphia beer world. Mark your calendars (Fri 06 May 2009 to Sun 15 May 2009), next year’s Philly Beer Week will be even bigger and better than this year’s, which was pretty big and pretty great.

The weather was still beautiful so I street hiked back to work from the Transportation Center.
