Cafe Grindstone: Fueling Your Daily Grind

By Kelly White

Cafe Grindstone will sharpen you up, whether you have a sword or not. This being Philadelphia, I won’t ask questions if you do. The strength of the iced coffee is enough to cut through any brain fog, and the sheer size of the $2.00 brew is reminiscent of a Big Gulp. Plunk in some coffee ice cubes for 50 cents extra, and you’re ready for battle in Queen Village.

In that case, I do recommend the knife and sword sharpening services that grindmaster Brian Gallagher offers. He’s also a DJ, making him one of the most well-rounded coffeeshop owners in town. There’s a turntable set-up complete with disco ball by the counter. Take those beans and grind ‘em.

The space itself is a former art gallery and Gallagher will continue to host revolving artwork. Cushy seating completes the chill interior, which will host reggae brunches in the future. For now, offerings include fair-trade coffee, vegan chicken salad, and bagels from South Street Philly Bagels. It’s good to know that syrup-infused french toast bagels make the cut.
