R&J: Romeo and Juliet at the Adrienne Theater

Everybody gets the gist of Romeo and Juliet. A forbidden love between two hotties from rival families who eventually commit suicide in mutual misery. There have been tons of variations on these themes, from West Side Story to High School Musical. Starting August 1st, Philly’s Mauckingbird Theater Company will bring a whole new twist to the classic tragedy.
The Mauckingbird production of a play titled Shakespeare’s R&J, adapted by Joe Calarco, sets the timeless love story in a “repressive preparatory school” with an all-male cast, featuring Evan Jonigkeit as Romeo. Romeo, with three other schoolboys, study Romeo and Juliet as the play and their lives become indistinguishable.
Mauckingbird Theater Company is quickly developing a reputation for critically acclaimed plays that explore homosexual themes in classic literature after the breakout success of the early 2008 run of The Misanthrope, Mauckingbird’s first production.
