Shake Your Tambourine at The Institute
Check out Billy W. of monthly parties Robotique (Medusa Lounge) and Hip Replacement (The Khyber). He’s now got a weekly thing called Shake Your Tambourine where he spins seriously serious disco with a smattering of early hip-hop and R+B in the mix.
This all happens at The Institute, which used to be the infamous Jesse’s Tenderline Cafe at 12th and Green. The new proprietors have kept Jesse’s North Philly charm intact, but they’ve managed to fix the place up a bit and bring in some fancy beers.

Heather the owner says:
There is no “north philly charm” in my bar and we did a hell of a lot more than fix it up “a bit”
Its been totally gutted. We have eliminated the problems that made the place infamous in the first place. And being part of the PDAC for the 6th precinct helps. Don’t belive me? Check out what Joe Sixpack had to say on his blog.

Heya! I live right around the corner from here and I’ve noticed that things have been changing… :) even just seeing the Sierra Nevada and Sam Adams signs in the window I was thinking, “Wow beer I actually like” Well MORE LIKE: “The white students who live around here might actually want to go in there now, considering it’s lookin a lot less shady” Sorry but true. I was mugged a half a block from that bar.
BUT no worries I am still planning on checking it out!
Note to Heather, work on the defensive tone there, definitely off-putting…
