Hidden Treasure: The Rosenbach Museum in Rittenhouse

Post by Jonathan Wetstein

As the former home of two brothers, the Rosenbach Museum & Library reflects the legacy of Dr. A.S.W. and Philip Rosenbach. Located on Delancey Place near the intersection with 20th Street, A.S.W. was a dealer and collector of rare books and manuscripts, while Philip was a well-noted expert in fine and decorative arts. Since 1954, interest in preserving the two brothers’ personal collections and company archive has enabled the Rosenbach Museum’s holdings to carry on and even expand well beyond the collections of the two brothers.

More than a cultural destination, this Rittenhouse museum also serves as a research center, with one of the nation’s greatest collections of rare books and manuscripts. This beautiful, historic home is also filled with fine art and antiques. The museum also boasts the largest collection of portrait miniatures to be painted in oil on metal, as well as fine 18th and 19th-century British and American furniture. The Rosenbach Museum is open Tuesdays through Thursday after 10am.
