Philadelphia Slick & The Superpowers @ World Cafe Live

Philadelphia Slick are Philly mainstays. Rocking stages large and small, the band has proven, there are no small gigs, only small bands. And this 8-piece, with its legions of local fans, could never be accused of being a small band.
So when Philly Slick was recently asked to throw a party in the World Café main room, one of the largest stages in Philly, they had to do it big. It’s a lot of room to fill so the guys enlisted the help of some top-notch talent from across the Northeast. What hits the stage this Saturday is sure to blow your horn, bang your drum and shake your ass all the way through the next work week.
Joining Philly’s other favorite hip-hop act will be The Superpowers, wildman afrobeat instrumentalists out of New York and Boston. Also familiar with playing full stages, The Superpowers come with 11 members, all ready to blow minds all over Walnut Street with their funky, Afro-and-jazz-inspired tunes. Opening the evening will be I Yahn I Arkestra, A traditional reggae group singing original tunes that almost sound like hymns in their patent preaching of Rastafarian teachings. Another group focused on a wide array of instrumentation, I Yahn I comes off as a bit gimmicky at times, but their energy, percussion and horn work will win you over.
With this bill, Philadelphia Slick has brought some world music into a top time slot at a mainstream venue, proving once and for all that great music is not born out of genre worship but out of diversification. Come check out some great musicians make a different kind of music for a change. And then sit back and get ready to rock with one of Philly’s best.
