No, it’s not an open mic. It’s Retroweirdclick, presented every Tuesday night at Silk City by Danophonic and Chuck Treece. Launched in June, Retroweirdclick, “the ultimate showcase for underground bands,” is an event run by and for people who love music–not one particular “kind” of music, just music in general. It’s a big party for people–musicians and fans alike–who want to get out there and support Philly musicians and hear some new sounds week after week. The crowd is there for the music, not to get trashed and not just to hear their friend’s band play. This truly unique event is held at Silk City, the closest thing Philly has to a perfect venue.

Here’s the lineup for tomorrow’s show:

JESSIE TEXAS: one of Treece’s side projects, “whatever it needs to be.”

THE MLMS: one of the tightest rock bands in Philly, formed by guitarist Ben “Bananas” O’Neill and keyboardist/guitarist Chris Gibbons. The diversity of Ben’s musical experience represents the spirit of Retroweirdclick perfectly. He studied jazz guitar at UArts, performed and recorded with the likes of Musiq Soulchild, Bilal, and Erykah Badu, led the experimental funk/jazz trio the Mini Qs during their 3 1/2 year stint at Old City’s Marmont, and plays gospel music at a huge church in Delaware every week. Now he’s focusing on the MLMs, who play 2-minute pop songs with simple but original lyrics and some of the catchiest hooks around.

THE HIPNOTIX: a reggae/ska band from D.C.

MOBILE PLEASURE LOUNGE: Guitarist/producer Tom Spiker’s live, improvised film scoring project. That’s right, Spiker and a shifting cast of band mates spontaneously make music to accompany film clips projected behind them.

ASANTE AMEN: a reggae singer visiting the States from Jamaica

and special guest, Philly’s own DJ C SHARP
