The Big Green Earth Store

Post by Kelly White

Say you wanted to refill your laundry detergent bottle instead of buying a new jug of the harsh stuff? Walk or ride your bike to Big Green Earth in Old City, head to the filling station, and siphon as much earth-friendly soap or non-toxic cleaner as you need.

The store’s concept is simple: bring all of your old batteries and unused cell phones for their dropbox, leave with a toothbrush made out of yogurt containers or a package of biodegradable plasticware. They’ll dispose of your junk properly, turn you into a responsible consumer, and show you some of the latest energy-saving alternative products on the market. All of the store’s goods are sourced from recycled materials. They do the worrying so that your shopping experience is less of a guilt trip. The staff is trained to answer any questions you have about saving the planet. No, really, ask away.

I had a million questions about one of their more wow-eliciting items, a solar backpack that re-charges electronics with panels made from soda bottles. My laptop battery would be unstoppable. At least until nighttime.
