University City’s Mill Creek Farm

Post by Jonathan Wetstein
At 4901 Brown Street in West Philadelphia a vibrant community garden has been flourishing for more than 15 years. Funded by the Philadelphia Water Department in partnership with the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society the site has also been a urban farm since 2005. For nearly threes years, the Mill Creek Farm has flourished as a collectively run urban education site.
The farm is also an exquisite example of successful reuse of vacant land for the purpose to improve local access to nutritious foods and to promote sustainable resource use by growing and distributing produce and by demonstrating ecological methods of living. They also feature a “green” shed with a mosaic mural in its native Philadelphia style.
Its proximity to the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel, and the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy makes this site a well worth visit for students and families interested in learning about the ecological ways to sustainable living. It makes for a great stop if you and your family are visiting the area.
