Weekend Picks: Wednesday Edition!

Sebastienne Mundheim’s Sea of Birds

Multidisciplinary performance wizard Sebastienne Mundheim’s new history/memory/magic play, about an Eastern European boy’s time in a displacement camp and an American boy’s parallel fantasy life. At the beautiful and horrendously underutilized Ice Box Project Space. Friday at 9pm, $20; runs through September 2nd.
Sonic Youth, The Hold Steady

This is sold out, but you can still sneak in, or show up to try to give Thurston your zine and your tape. 8pm, $10.

Philadelphia party beer drinker bands and everyone’s favorite Philadelphia party DJ unit. Eat delicious clams downstairs. 9:30pm, $10
IN FLUX Emerging Artists Series
UArts Arts Bank, 250 S Broad
Mascher Space Coop’s program of works in progress by emerging choreographers, with conversations following. This show features the top four acts from the juried series in May. Friday and Saturday at 10pm, Sunday at 3pm, $20.

Kid Simple

Azuka Theater’s new “radio play in the flesh” about a kid who invents a machine that can hear the unhearable, and his mission to save the sounds of the universe. It features a promising live Foley sound design and opens today.
Fringe Festival

Mystery Beer Weekend
Memphis Taproom, 2331 E. Cumberland St
Three days of “beer sleuthing,” in which the taproom offers 33 beers and challenges its drinkers to identify them. Huge beer-related prizes go to the winner; more info at the link above. 5pm Friday, 11am Saturday and Sunday; free to show up, pay as you go.
Rooftop Gardens
The Kimmel Center
Spamalot and Parenting 101 The Musical are on at the Kimmel this weekend, but I’d say the only thing they have going there over the Fringe Fest is their rooftop gardens. More here.
