German-American Steuben Parade
Post by Kelly White
You’ve heard of Oktoberfest and every other major drinking holiday. But what precedes the ever-popular Bavarian bier & sausage fest? The 37th annual Steuben Parade in Northeast Philly. It starts off at on Frankford Avenue between Welsh Road and Knorr Street at 2pm on Saturday, September 27, with honorary chairman Mayor Nutter.
German-Americans have been in Philadelphia for 325 years. Founded in 1970 in Philadelphia, the parade observes Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, the Prussian General who helped George Washington and the American troops win the Revolutionary War. We owe this dude a parade.
After priming you with the procession, the party moves on to the United German Hungarian Club for Oktoberfest. That means beer, food, and dancing to tunes from Germany’s Die Sandler and the Alex Meixner Band.
