Global Suburbia: Art Opening at the Abington Art Center

As we rethink the validity, joys and nightmares that cohabitate in the lands just outside the city, curator Sue Spaid has brought together a number of artists from disparate backgrounds, working in a broad range of approaches to their various messages, that look at the massive and inescapable phenomenon that is Global Suburbia.

For those of us that grew up in the suburbs and would like to give them a little smack, I invite you to broaden your expectations and experience celebration more readily than condemnation in this show. Not ‘gee whiz’ celebration in a Norman Rockwell way, but Spaid rather uses the suburbs, their inherent materials, patterns, moods as a jumping off point to rethink, or confirm, or subvert, or just have fun, and we’re drawn in by elements of the familiar.

The opening is TONIGHT, Friday the 12th. Show details and directions are posted on the Abington Art Center’s website, and there is a more formal curator’s essay just here. The Abington Art Center is a vibrant suburban arts outpost and as suburbs go, Abington and Jenkintown are interesting places in their own right, …very much worth exploring!
