Day of the Dead with Sol y Canto and Melodic Vision

Post by Joel Franke

Before there were gratuitous films about knife wielding nightmarians and before ten-year-olds were sent out begging for sweets dressed as Ron Weasley, Christmas trees, or burn victims, this time of the year served to acknowledge and honor those who’ve passed; it marked the end of the harvest and the onset of winter, the season historically viewed as one of death. In recognition of this season, Sol y Canto will take the stage of the Kimmel Center’s 650-seat Perelman Theater, along with Melodic Vision, in a multi-media celebration of the traditional Mexican Holiday, the Day of the Dead.

Since forming nearly a decade ago, Sol y Canto, a group made up of immensely talented players from various Latin American countries, has focused on composing and performing music that’s both true to the traditional Latin roots and training of the musicians and dynamic, accessible, and authentic for the listening audience. With Melodic Vision at their side, the acclaimed duo of Susan Wilson and Rebecca Strauss, the evening promises to be a multi-sensory experience that will pay due homage to the shared human ideas of heritage and life and death.

Before the 7:30pm Perelman performance (beginning at 6pm), there will be an exhibit of alters and a traditional Day of the Dead ritual ceremony in the Innovation Studio as part of the Kimmel Center’s Free in the Plaza series.
