La Viola: Is The City’s Best Italian Cooking Across from Monks?

Post by Jon Wetstein

That’s right. I said that. La Viola’s formal Italian BYOB establishment is at the top of my list for taste, service, and portions. The restaurant is an extremely cozy little place, located on the northwest side of 16th Street.

My experience at La Viola involves casual trips to the establishment with co-workers for lunch. The waiters bring very gracious and tentative service even when this restaurant is crowded. My co-workers and I always insist on sharing several appetizers before sampling one another’s entrees. While they are not for me, I should tell all after being assured by my peers this place has the best Funghi Trentino (porcini shitake and Portobello mushrooms in a garlic basil and olive oil sauce) in all of Philadelphia.

One of the best entrees to showcase this kitchen’s capabilities is in their Fettuccine Al Salmone. Pasta with smoked salmon that is prepared in a pink cognac sauce enables you to see how well their seafood matches up with their pasta. For the more experienced, another must try is their Vitello Carcioffi (veal medallions with artichokes and sun dried peppers in a white wine sauce). Of their dessert selection if Chocolate Mouse cake may warrant an unwanted food coma, their elegant tiramisu is the perfect end to an authentic Italian meal especially if you find yourself at La Viola in mid-afternoon.

The mussels in a white sauce are also quite good, and SO cheap! You can get a giant heaping bowl for about $6.
