The Prohibition Taproom: Opening on November 1st!

Post by Kelly Bardon

When first moving to the loft district, my new neighbors and I agreed that though we found the location, the view, and the parking situation ideal, something was missing: we wished for a neighborhood bar. Although walking distance to many center city haunts, there was no convenient place to pop in after work for a quick drink, nothing we could really call ours.

Luckily, that’s about to change with the November 1st opening of the Prohibition Taproom. The taproom, a former speakeasy, is rumored to maintain its old style, tempting me to forgo my original Halloween costume idea to invest in a flapper dress.

The Taproom’s owners, Michael Pasquarello and Jeniphur Whitleigh, also own the nearby Cafe Lift, located across 13th street. I’ve been frequenting Cafe Lift since I first moved to the neighborhood, abandoning former brunch destinations for Pasquarello’s Cannoli French Toast or Sausage Fritata. The Prohibition Taproom will feature a full menu along with an impressive tap, and I look forward to whatever is cooked up next.

We’ve been excited about this for months now. Its becoming a destination area. Root is also a nice addition.
When one place opens in a “fringe” area or so its been called (I disagree but whatever) it gets some attention. When there are 2 places people really take notice. Within a block of each other now: 2 beer bars. Both owned by people who live in the community and know just how great the area is.

I went to Prohibition on Saturday night and the place was packed with people just enjoying the food, bar, and atmosphere. It’s such a different place to get together and hang out.

I wish Michael and Jeniphur the very best

Went here opening night last Saturday. It was really hard to tell what this place is going for. It’s a very plain, kind of boring looking space on the inside and out. It was filled with all kinds of different people (probably because it was opening night); jocks, hipsters, yuppies, and older folks. The music was truly awful; think George Thorogood, Guns & Roses, Nickelback and whatever else they play on 94.1 or 93.3.
The pluses, cool barstaff and great beer list. Didn’t try the food but it looked like decent standard bar food.
Place not living up to its potential in my opinion, but it could be a great place if they pick one theme and stick with it. The inside needs a more hip design (the place used to be a speakeasy, which could be an awesome theme!) and the music needs to change, unless they are going for the 40yr old biker crowd…
Good Luck
