Gustavo Dudamel’s Performance @ The Kimmel: At A Loss For Words

After seeing Gustavo Dudamel’s performance last week at the Kimmel Center, only one word comes to mind for this review… fantastic. However, that’s certainly not enough for a proper review, so I decided to poll the audience after the show. Here’s some feedback from the crowd.

“Even though I am not an expert in classical music I could see and hear why everybody is talking about Dudamel: his conducting style is very different from the typical conductor in that he has a passion and emotion that he transmits in every movement, gesture and even brief jumps on the podium. On top of that his attitude is both charismatic (with a great and genuine smile) and impressively humble. I am very proud to witness a fellow Venezuelan inject a new life into classical music.” “” Ruben R.

“It really was a great concert, I had a wonderful time. The way Gustavo concentrates when he is on the stage is amazing. The way he moves his hands. I had the opportunity to meet him and talk to him: he is really humble, and he has a beautiful smile!” “” Yamilet L.

“I think I’m falling in love with Gustavo Dudamel. Next time, we need to get seats on the other side of the stage because there is a complete second level of performance just by watching his face when he directs.” “” Krystal S.

I had a seat in the conductor’s circle (the seats behind the orchestra) and though the sound of the orchestra is out of balance there, it’s worth it to watch the conductor’s face, especially Dudamel. The reason that the entire conductor’s circle crowd jumped to a unanimous standing ovation after the second encore was that we got to watch Dudamel conduct with his eyes (and his hair!) for about a third of the Hungarian Dances. It was fantastic!

You know what I love, I love when people say a classical concert was amaaaaaazing without mentioning anything specific about what was amazing, or even what was played.

I also love it when people talk about how something is injecting new life into stodgy old classical music when they’ve clearly only been to see the orchestra once in the past year. How is this such a breath of fresh air when the speakers don’t appear to have anything to compare Dudamel’s conducting style to besides, I dunno, Stowkowski in Fantasia?

these god damn kids today

get off my lawn!
