El Camino: the Real Deal

For my very first Halloween (that would be October 1985), my mom dressed me up as a cowgirl. Since then, I’ve had an affinity for all things Western, from my brief flirtation with Kid Rock (ok, fake Western) to my favorite pair of cowboy boots, which have earned me the nickname “Cowgirl Kate.”

So of course I was pumped when I learned that a cowboy bar would be moving into the old Deuce location on Liberties Walk in Northern Liberties. A cowboy bar for cowgirl Kate! The details only confirm its awesomeness: the bar, called El Camino Real, is the latest creation of restaurateur Owen Kamihira (who also owns Bar Ferdinand, next door), inspired by his recent trip to border towns El Paso, Texas, and Juarez, Mexico.

Chef Jennifer Zavala (Silk City) heads up the kitchen, offering both Tex-Mex (El Paso) and authentic Mexican (Juarez) dishes, like gorditas (puffed shells filled with beans, cheese and guacamole), tripitas burritos (burritos filled with chitterlings), beef brisket, mac n’ cheese, and more. Prices are around the $20 mark “”reasonable for any cowgirl.

Then there’s the bar: 25+ kinds of tequila and bourbon (as if you need an excuse!), as well as signature margaritas, Micheladas, and Southern sweet teas. And if the 8-foot longhorn skull and Virgin of Guadalupe statue adorning the walls don’t make you feel like a local in some roadside tavern on the border, well”¦you have no imagination. (And should leave immediately. This town ain’t big enough for the both of us!)
