Philly Beer Week: Top 5 Events in West & Southwest Philly

Some glasses at the Dock St Brewery
Philly Beer Week. It’s almost here people, and for the next week or so, I’ll be highlighting a whole bunch of events, places, meet and greets, etc where you can properly celebrate the nation’s best beer city. Today, I’ve got some of my favorite picks in West and Southwest Philadelphia.
Now remember, dear readers, there are over 300 600 (thanks Caroline) events going on all over Philadelphia. If you know a better event or brewery in the area, well please, by all means, leave it in the comments. Your tips and suggestions are more than welcome. You can check out a full listing of events on Philly Beer Week’s official website.
1. New Glarus Kick-Off Toast – So it’s a little off the beaten path. But the mother of all South Philly Gastropubs is offering something those Rittenhouse ritzypubs can’t match: free beer. The first 40 in the door for this kick-off toast will receive a free glass of New Glarus Belgian Red. Just ask your server/bartender for a ticket.
You know what they say”¦don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Even if you do have to travel for it. And while you are there, enjoy the massive beer selection and recently rehabbed menu. This event is today at 10PM! Don’t miss it.

Celebrate guilt-free with Dock Street’s five-mile scavenger run. 3. Homebrewers Reception Swap & Meet – Are you a homebrewer who is not getting the respect he deserves? Wanna get your beer into some appreciative hands and try a few yourself? Dock Street knows how you feel. After all, they brew all their beer in house.
And for Philly Beer Week, the famous Philly brewery hosts the Homebrewers Reception Swap & Meet, for homebrewers to come out, share tips and, most of all, taste! RSVP to dockstreetnf@comcast.net. Takes place on Sunday, March 8th at noon.

4. East Coast/West Coast Rivalry – Biggie v. TuPac, Lakers v. Celtics, Starbucks v. Everyone; the rivalry between our two coasts has been heated for years. And while we here in the east would love to write off the west as wine-drinkers en masse, we forget some wonderful brews come to us from our furthest-reaching neighbors.
But this event is not about giving the west its due. It’s about domination. We already know that Philadelphia has the best beer week in the country. But it’s time to see who has the best beer. That’s why Local 44 is hosting deal of the day beer specials with one great beer from each coast! More info at www.local44beerbar.com. Takes place on March 9th.

5. Yo/Oy He’brew Beer & Shabbos Dinner – For all you glued to CNN following the tough times in the Middle East, He’brew’s biblical beers are always there for you. These tongue-in-cheek titles will be featured and paired with mom’s matzo ball soup, sweet & sour meatballs and other oyish specialities. So come out for a special Beer Week Shabbos and feel better on March 13th.
