Tour the Free Quaker Meeting House!

Mention the word Quaker and many will think of the gentleman dressed in black who adorns the side of instant oatmeal. Tasty yes, but would you picture that man carrying a musket gun during our battle for independence?
Called “free” or “fighting” Quakers, this select group broke away from the more traditional pacifist Quakers in 1781 because of their support for the Revolution.
Outcast, they found refugee at 5th and Arch where the Free Quaker Meeting House still stands today.
Although no longer used as a meeting place, you can still learn about this unique branch of Quaker religion from its founders, Timothy Matlack and Samuel Wetherill.
Throughout the month of February, their doors will be open for any questions, comments, or history lessons about their hand in the cause including a certain flag maker named Betsy. Save the oatmeal jokes for later.

While you’re there, check out the giant bust of Ben Franklin at 4th and Arch. It is covered with keys donated by local schoolchildren. Here’s the uwishunu story on its dedication: http://www.uwishunu.com/2007/10/05/keys-to-community-sculpture-unveiling/
