Pictures from Cézanne and Beyond

gallery-at-cezanne-and-beyond

Philadelphia has always had a special relationship with French artish Paul Cézanne. In 1996, hundreds of thousands of people came to the city from all across the country to see his work on display. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is now trying to recapture some of that previous magic with their new show, Cézanne and Beyond, which runs February 26th through May 17th, 2009.

What makes Cézanne and Beyond so unique is the fact that it pairs works by the post-Impressionist master with pieces done by artists who were inspired by him, sometimes quite directly. Included in the show are paintings, sculpture and photographs by Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, Ellsworth Kelly and Jasper John as well as many others.

I just went here and it is AWESOME. See if you can get a volunteer guide to explain some of the works and their common themes/relationship. It’s fascinating, I swear.

I think I’ll check this out. I went to the exhibit in ’96 and wondered what could be so different this time around.
