The Rose Tattoo Café: Here’s Lookin’ At You, Philly

Post by Anna Cutler

I found Casablanca on 19th Street. It’s dark and subdued, with gentle white lights climbing up intricate iron railings to a hidden balcony. Candles illuminate the ferns, flowers and delicate wooden fans, and the stars seem to shine through the stained glass accents. I’ve fallen in love with The Rose Tattoo Café.

The veil that surrounds this Center City haven is dingy. Tucked inside a 100-year old gray Victorian home, Rose Tattoo seems to be a hidden oasis only a lucky few have discovered. Looking like a beat-up bar with a biker name, the sneaky façade of this classy Café makes for a pleasant surprise when venturing inside.

The wine selection is divine, and the service whispers old-world charm; the only thing missing in this vintage restaurant are the subtle notes of Sam the piano player serenading the couples as they fall in love. The food is simple but creative with a touch of elegance, and when you’re here be sure to save room for their exquisite home-made desserts. While you’re sipping chardonnay and divulging in their mussels and jambalaya, you’ll feel like you’re on a Moroccan holiday in the ’50′s. It’ll be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
