Hamlet @ The Lantern Theatre: A Must See!

Photos by Jeffrey Stockbridge
If you haven’t already, see some Shakespeare this spring! In celebration of the conclusion of their 15th Anniversary season, the Lantern Theatre Company is presenting Hamlet from now through May 10th to both general audiences and select high school students. The play, which is produced by Shakespeare for a New Generation, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, is directed by Charles McMahon and stars Geoff Sobelle as Hamlet.
William Shakespeare’s Hamlet has long been one of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays. The tragic tale of the Danish prince has resonated with audiences since the play began running more than 400 years ago. If you’ve never read Hamlet, here’s the story. Hamlet plots to kill his uncle Claudius, who is currently married to his mother, Queen Gertrude. Hamlet believes King Claudius is responsible for the murder of Hamlet’s father, the former king. Along the way, Hamlet’s sweetheart, Ophelia (Melissa Dunphy) and her family are adversely affected by Hamlet’s increasingly eccentric behavior.
Watching Hamlet at the Lantern is akin to being physically immersed in the play itself. The Lantern’s intimate setting allows characters to involve the audience in the play, both during monologues and action scenes. The nine cast members are highlighted by austere stage settings. Sobelle’s depiction of Hamlet, as well as hisdexterity across the stage audibly amazed the audience on opening night and will doubtless enthrall future audiences. So don’t be like a certain Danish prince and quibble. Get thee to the Lantern and see you some Hamlet. Happy Shakespearing!
