Philadelphia Shakespeare Food Tours

“Unquiet meals make ill digestions.” So Shakespeare wrote in his Comedy of Errors. Heed the great bard’s advice this month with some good eats and good times courtesy of City Food Tours’ Shakespearean Food Experience, in honor of Will’s 445th birthday. The foodie fete is a Shakespeare-themed culinary excursion, featuring lunch and tastings throughout the city.

The three hour adventure will treat you to authentic Elizabethan epicurean bliss from English Ales to tasty oysters. Your tour guides will set the scene at noon at the Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre. Sip on Falstaff’s beverage of choice, Spanish sack (or sherry), plus real mead (fermented honey) and traditional ale. Special Shakespearean guest appearances are just an added bonus.

The time-traveling journey will continue at Naked Chocolate Café, complete with Elizabethan sweet treats galore and a light modern lunch to prep your palette for the gustatory riches to come. Next, onto Reading Terminal’s Downtown Cheese Shop for bites like Romeo and Juliet’s hometown Verona’s famed cheese. The final act takes place at Solefood Restaurant for an oyster tasting.

Book a spot on the tour on your own, with some friends, or with out-of-towners looking for a creative introduction to the great culinary world of Philly. All participants must be 21 or older. Advanced reservations are required.

Stomach still rumbling for a serving of the Bard of Avon’s literary genius? Return to the Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre to check out the performance schedule, also available online at www.phillyshakespeare.org.
