Philadelphia’s nEW Festival: Sustainable Dancing?

About everywhere you look nowadays you hear something about being green, sustainable or environmentally friendly. I think we can all agree that if it’s good for the planet, it’s good for us. But when the sustainable movement reaches art, and especially dance, how does that translate? I mean, just what is a sustainable dance community?
Well, instead of recycled paper, we’ve got a year of choreographic research and development. Made possible by nEW, a dance incubator from the Melanie Stewart Dance Theater, dancers and artists work together in a collaborative environment. The result of this collaborative effort will be showcased via the nEW Festival. A blend of performances and workshops, the festival showcases the purpose of nEW; encourage risk-taking and embrace the idea of cooperative and collaborative art-making…. all of which is sustainable.
From June 3 to 7, at the University of the Arts, the Festival will showcase a week of premiere dance performances by nEW Artists Charles Anderson / dance theatre X, Eun Jung Choi-Gonzalez (Da-Da-Dance Project), Jeffrey Gunshol, Jaamil Kosoko (KOSOKO/perFORMance), Olive Prince Dance, Gabrielle Revlock and Melanie Stewart Dance Theatre.
The nEW Festival will also feature daily community classes and workshops, taught by nEW artists, from June 1 to 19, at the UArts School of Dance.
