Sigmund Freud and Salvador Dali Meet in Hysteria @ the Wilma Theater

Famed Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali was 35 and criticized by some for chasing money by the time legendary Austrian psychiatrist Sigmund Freud died in 1939.

Hysteria, directed by Jiri Zizka and making its East Coast premiere at the Wilma Theater from May 13 to June 14, takes place one year earlier in London. It’s based on an actual encounter between Dali, played by Matthew Floyd Miller, and his idol Freud, played by Alvin Epstein.

The play springs from Freud’s eccentric mind, as he juggles visits from Dali and a mysterious young woman named Jessica, who can’t seem to remain clothed. Freud finds himself being psychoanalyzed by Jessica and Dali’s surrealism creeps into Freud’s dreams. It’s said to be way fun.

Hysteria at the Wilma begins previews on May 13, opens on May 20, and closes on June 14, 2009. Tickets start at $39 and are available at the Wilma Box Office by calling (215) 546-7824, visiting 265 S. Broad Street, or online at www.wilmatheater.org.
