Skin & Bones: Tattoos Exhibit @ Independence Seaport Museum

Now through January 2010, the Independence Seaport Museum is featuring Skin & Bones, an exhibit featuring photographs of tattoos, inking instruments, and all sorts of seafaring tattoo paraphernalia. Stop by and learn about the beliefs, traditions, and power of the tattoo in American maritime culture. Like how sailors thought of their bodies as a canvas to permanently display their values, seek protection from the sea, or show some sailor brotherly love.

If you have tattoos or just think they’re cool / interesting, you can watch video stories of modern-day tatted sailors or enter the interactive recreation of an old-time “tattoo parlor” at this exhibit. A video projection system will show a “tattoo artist” talking to his customers while “inking” their forearms.

Tickets are only $12 – definitely worth learning the history of tattoos, or finding your next meaningful tat design.

Maria Stops says:

Hello…I am from Philly(just there), and did not know about your exhibit. But back now in New Mexico. Wanted to know if you are selling a commemorative T-shirt re: the Skins and Bones exhibit? And also, if you know the title of a book that came out in 2009 that is totally focused on Navy Sailors and Tattoos? Any suggestions? And if there is a t-shirt, may I purchase…and the cost, if you please?
Thanks so kindly,
Maria Stops Las Cruces, New Mexico
