Sympathetic Magic @ Art in the Age

Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction unveils its latest exhibit this Friday, June 5th at First Friday. Sympathetic Magic, running from June 5th to June 28th, presents digital media works from Amy Lockhart, Rio Robbins, Jen Smith, Jacolby Satterwhite.

At the center of the exhibit are the theories of Walter Benjamin, German cultural writer and a favorite of critical theory students everywhere. Benjamin is the inspiration for the very existence of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, an artists’ collective dedicated to a DIY ethos in the face of mass commercialization. Sympathetic Magic specifically looks at the rituals and relationships to be found both within a work of art and between itself and other works. This sympathetic connection proposes a new way of relating to art, the world and each other.

A First Friday reception at the Art in the Age gallery celebrates the opening of Sympathetic Magic. In addition to meeting the curators, Courtney Dailey and Jacqueline Clay, and artist Robbins, you can also be one of the first to try Root, the new liquor from Art in the Age coming to state stores and select bars this month. It’s root beer but alcoholic! They’ll be serving up the cocktails Root n’ Ginger and Root n’ Birch. Yum!
