I have always been a huge fan of bloodsports. Hockey, roller derby, and MMA all get my pulse racing and keep me on the edge of my seat. I think most human-beings are drawn to full-contact sports because of our innate fascination with drama and gore. The fledgling world of bicycle-polo promises all of the above, and this Labor Day weekend it also holds promises of beer. And some fellow cycling enthusiasts here in Philly have set out to make certain this all happens, with a benefit this weekend.
On Saturday, August 1st at 4pm, the Philadelphia Brewing Company and Trophy Bike Garage will host a fundraising party for the first Hardcourt Bicycle Polo World Championships. The event will feature brews from the PBC, limited edition pint glasses, and a raffle for all kinds of neat stuff including Velocity rims, Continental tires, Bell helmets, Time pedals, a Brooks saddle, t-shirts, hats, socks, and more! There will also be food provided by Full Plate Café and Home Slice Pizzeria.
This championship game, which goes down over Memorial Day weekend, will bring out 140 players from across the world who are passionate about this sport. Primarily an urban sport played by a punk-oriented crowd, bicycle polo has grown in popularity across Europe, North America, and is now popping up in parts of Asia and Australia. For more information please visit the Hardcourt Bicycle Polo Federation’s official website.
