Chapterhouse Cafe & Gallery

As far as neighborhoods go, the Bella Vista area just south of South St. has pretty much everything you could ask for. Go-to brunch spot? Check. Neighborhood dive bar? Why not check out The Dive, at East Passyunk and Montrose? Chapterhouse, the local coffee shop on 9th and Bainbridge, rounds out the trifecta with its eclectic drink menu, spacious layout (4 separate rooms!) and fun collection of books and board games.
For the more typical caffeine consumer, Chapterhouse boasts a long list of tea selections, while the less traditional drinker can get his or her fix with one of its mixed Italian soda options. Or, try a combination of the two with the popular iced tea sodas. Favorites include the Black Earl, a mixture of earl gray tea and blackberry cola, and a blend of green tea and coconut soda.
Along with the drinks, the floor-to-ceiling windows and quirky wall art provide their own natural pick-me-up. The current exhibit includes paintings by Doug Boehm, whose illustrations have appeared in such publications as The Village Voice and Rolling Stone, and Allison Nitch, whose work has been published in Spin. In addition to drinks, Chapterhouse also serves a variety of sandwiches and pastries sure to hit the spot morning, noon or night.
Once you’ve finished your work in its incredibly comfy bungee desk chairs, move on over and play a game of Cranium on the over-sized leather couch. Or, indulge the inner nerd and catch up on your National Geographic or A Briefer History of Time. And, hey, if nothing else, free wi-fi!
