Jazz and more… Where I’ll be and where you should be…
TUESDAY 8/11/09
Muhsinah
Silk City, 435 Spring Garden St.
A lyricist, composer, singer, and producer, Muhsinah makes what a friend described as “alternative urban music.†She’s one of those artists I’ve been hearing about for far too long not to have actually heard in person, and I have little doubt she’ll live up to everything I’ve heard.
9 p.m., $10
WEDNESDAY 8/12/09
Three Blind Mice
Ortlieb’s Jazzhaus, 847 N. 3rd St.
Great organ jazz from Lucas Brown, Victor North, and Wayne Smith.
8 p.m., $3
THURSDAY 8/13/09
Agent Moosehead, Calvin Weston’s Nassira Project, et al.
World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St.
Agent Moosehead plays funky sometimes-improvisational jazz/rock and features a topnotch horn section: Dan Peterson, Tom Madeja, and Aaron Goode (of John Legend’s band). Drummer Calvin Weston has been making Philly proud for some 30 years–from his stint with Ornette Coleman (before his 20th birthday) right up until last Saturday’s Johnny Brenda’s set with funkateer Bernie Worrell.
8 p.m., $15
FRIDAY 8/14/09
Jef Lee Johnson Band, The Bottomfeeders
Moonstone Arts Center (formerly Robin’s Bookstore), 110 S. 13th St.
This month’s Lucky Old Souls @ Moonstone show features guitarist Jef Lee Johnson, who might just be the best guitarist you’ve never heard of. You’ve probably heard him, though, because he’s been on recordings with the likes of the Roots, Erykah Badu, and Common. With him tonight are bassist Chico Huff and drummer Adam Guth. Also playing are the Bottomfeeders, Dan Peterson’s low-end free-jazz/funk project, with Dan on contra-alto clarinet, Dave Fishkin on baritone sax, Dan Blacksberg on trombone, Travis Woodson on guitar, and Tony Catastrophe on drums.
8:30 p.m., $10, BYOB
SATURDAY 8/15/09
