Dirty Rotten Scoundrels @ the Walnut Street Theatre
![]()
Happy 201st birthday to the Walnut Street Theatre! It should come as no surprise that the oldest theater in the country is right here in Philadelphia, on the edge of Old City. To kick off the new season they’re presenting a brand new production of the hit musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Thought Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was just a movie, starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin? Yup, it is: the play is an adaptation of the classic comedy, and is every bit as hilarious. If you’re a fan of the movie, the musical is a must-see!
When Dirty Rotten Scoundrels opened on Broadway in 2005 it was nominated for a whopping 11 Tony awards, including Best Musical. With a raucous mix of musical styles and jokes that are low brow, high brow, and everything in between, the story centers around two con-men working the French Riviera and preying on unsuspecting tourists. They both want the territory for their own, so they make a deal that the first one to nab the fortunes of a sexy American heiress will get to stay, and the other has to leave town. Obviously, shenanigans ensure.
The Walnut Street Theatre has gathered an all-star ensemble of actors and designers from both Philly and New York for this all-out production. It’ll be sure to start their season on the right foot, and leave you with a smile. Check out the website for show times, tickets, and more info.
