Totally Terrific Treehouses @ Tyler Arboretum

In the annals of famous treehouses, many names come to mind. The Swiss Family Robinson sheltered themselves in a veritable tree palace. The lost boys of Peter Pan have been depicted in any number of deciduous dwellings, including the combination tree fortress and skate-park constructed in the 1991 Robin Williams classic Hook. And even Tarzan got in on the fun both in live action and animated form.
Philadelphia’s Tyler Arboretum can now join this storied list as they present their newest exhibition Totally Terrific Treehouses. Local artists have created treehouses in all shapes and sizes for you to explore. You will never look at a tree the same way again.
Go inside the world’s greenest treehouse with The Three Little Pigs Go Green; a structure made from straw sticks and bricks and containing green home innovations like a rain barrel, a green roof and sustainable building materials.

Dance it out with Strummin’ and Drummin’, an interactive structure containing a tree stump base designed to look like a drum and a felled tree shaped like a guitar neck.
And touch the sky with the Bird Preserve, a giant birdhouse that visitors can climb inside to learn about birds and how they make use of their environment.
This treehouse exhibition can be viewed in a slideshow and virtual tour on Tyler’s official website or you can visit the exhibit in person as it is free with regular admission. As a closing celebration, the Arboretum hosts Tree Treasures, an informational seminar about creating a treehouse that is in tune with the natural environment and a little bit of info on what makes trees so amazing. In either case, you will be bearing witness to Philadelphia’s addition to a long list of tree-limb innovators. We just hope this annual exhibition continues to live up to the challenge.
