Wawapalooza 3: The Dark Roast [Review]

There are so many Philly Fringe and Live Arts shows to choose from in this year’s festival that choosing just a few can be an overwhelming task. If just glancing at the Festival Guide is stressing you out, take in a show that’ll be sure to loosen you up – I’dRatherBeHere’s Wawapalooza 3: The Dark Roast.

Coming off of sold-out runs in the past couple years’ festivals, the comedy show is back in a bigger space this year, the Society Hill Playhouse, a cute local theatre at 8th and Lombard. The troupe plays to a rowdy crowd (you get a free drink with your $10 ticket – an awesome deal!), alternating live action sketches with video clips, and poking fun at everything Philadelphians cherish… or despise.

Targeting Mummers, Eagles fans, colonial tour guides, and everything in between, the audience was in near-constant hysterics. The bit that elicited the most guffaws from yours truly was the mockumentry “A Tale of Two Food Stores,” about the rivalry between Whole Foods and Superfresh, which sit on opposite corners at the intersection of 9th and South Street.

This weekend is your last chance to catch Wawapalooza, so make sure you work it into your plans. Clocking in at 75 minutes, you’ll have plenty of time after the show to continue your fringe-related shenanigans, or you can take your comedy-fueled selves over to South Street to keep the evening rolling!
