Brunch @ the Marriott’s Thirteen

composite_thirteen

Ever wake up hungry (or hung-over) on a Saturday morning (or afternoon) and just wish you had everything to eat for breakfast? Who am I kidding – this happens every day to me, but more so on Saturdays. This is why Thirteen’s brunch buffet is my new best friend.

Every Saturday until noon, you can enjoy an all-you-can-stomach $19 breakfast feast at the Marriott’s restaurant on 12th & Market. Once you find the place, you walk into a very large dining area and will be helped by 13’s very nice staff. If you’re lucky, they seat you closest to the omelet station. There, a chef will take your order for whatever kind of omelet or Belgian waffle you’d like. We almost left without trying the waffles, but our waitress insisted that we at least split one, and boy am I glad I found room in my tummy for that! It was melt-in-your-mouth Belgian deliciousness.

While waiting for your omelet or waffle (or both!), fill your plate with the various sides like breakfast potatoes (I couldn’t stop raving about these), bacon, turkey sausage or biscuits, or grab a bowl of oatmeal. After your plate is full and subsequently empty, head on up to one of the other stations: cereal, pastry/toast station, or the cold bar. The cinnamon buns are just the right size so you can also try one of the chocolate chip crumb muffins, one of my faves of the morning.

My friend Sean and I almost totally missed the cold bar, and what a shame that would have been because the salmon was awesome. I made my own concoction of toast, cream cheese, salmon, onions and capers – mmm! Also choose from a nice fruit selection, cured meats and other various veggies and spreads at the cold bar.

With a TV at every booth, you won’t miss the news or college football while feasting away on all your favorite foods! Do not miss out on this brunch! Offered daily!

This Weekend: The Philadelphia vs. New York Rivalry Reaches A Whole New Level

phillies-eagles-comp-1uw

The South Philadelphia sports complex will be ground zero. (Clockwise from top: Photo by G. Widman, R. Kennedy, and With Love)

We’ve got:

Phillies vs.Yankees, Citizens Bank Park

Eagles vs. Giants, Lincoln Financial Field

Sixers vs. Knicks, Madison Square Garden

This weekend, the teams of Philadelphia and New York square off four times in three sports, making this weekend the ultimate Philly vs. New York showdown.

Serving as the opening act to the epic weekend, Saturday night the Sixers and Knicks square off in an early season match up at Madison Square Garden. Back in Philadelphia, the Phillies and Yankees go to battle Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park for Game 3 of the World Series.

Then on Sunday, not only are the Phils and Yanks dueling at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday for Game 4 (8:20 pm), but the Eagles are taking on the rival NY Giants several hours earlier (1 pm) at Lincoln Financial Field.

For New Yorkers making the trip down to Philly this weekend, may we suggest booking the World Series Hotel Package at the Hilton Inn at Penn? The package comes with a customized “welcome kit”, complete with various Phillies goodies and a pack of tissues (of which you’ll likely need to request more).

And dining? We know New Yorkers love their pizza and Philly is home to two of the top pizza restaurants in the country, Osteria and Tacconelli’s. But when in Philly, eat like a Philadelphian and enjoy a (real) mouth-watering authentic cheesesteak.

To recap:

Saturday:
Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks, Madison Square Garden, 7:30 pm
New York Yankees at Philadelphia Phillies, Citizens Bank Park, 7:57 pm

Sunday:
New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles, Lincoln Financial Field, 1:00 pm
New York Yankees at Philadelphia Phillies, Citizens Bank Park, 8:20 pm

GO PHILLIES!

Time to Order Your Thanksgiving Turkey

thanksgiving turkeyGrowing up, my family always bought our Thanksgiving turkey at a grocery store two or three days before the holiday. I was the designated shopping helper and so I’d offer assistance as my mom dug through the freezer case, trying to determine whether 16 pounds would be enough or if we should upgrade to a twenty pounder.

Problem with those turkeys was that you never knew how long they’d been frozen solid, where they’d come from and how they’d been treated while they were alive. In recent years, I’ve learned that if you’re willing to spend a bit more, you can order a fresh, local turkey that has never been frozen, was treated humanely and always tastes better than your average Butterball. Many will even have heritage, free-range and organic distinctions

Here in the Philadelphia area, we’re fortunate to have a number of options when it comes to ordering fresh turkeys. Just keep in mind that if you’re interested in this option, you’ve got to act soon; otherwise, all the available turkeys will be spoken for.

-The newly expanded Fair Food Farmstand at Reading Terminal Market offers a number of different options for Thanksgiving birds, including naturally-raised, organic and heritage breeds. Prices start at $2.99 and go up accordingly.

-The Food Trust has an entire page of their Web site devoted to Thanksgiving resources. Consider expanding your order to include pies, cakes and bread.

-Also at Reading Terminal Market, Godshall’s has been in the poultry business for generations. They’ll hook you up with just the right bird for your Thanksgiving needs.

More Cheesesteaks: Morimoto Adds a Special Gourmet Cheesesteak to Menu in Honor of the Phillies in the World Series

morimoto-philadelphia-entrance-small-1uwMorimoto is getting in on the cheesesteak fun.

In celebration of the Phillies playing in the World Series, Morimoto is now offering an upscale cheesesteak on its lunch and dinner menus.

The gourmet cheesesteak is made with Wagyu Kobe beef, topped with sweet soy sautéed onions, enoki mushrooms, and grilled scallions and served on an Amoroso roll. It’s accompanied by house-made tonkatsu sauce (Japanese ketchup), pommes frites and a seasonal salad. Price tag is $35.

Morimoto suggests you wash it all down with a glass of Morimoto’s signature beer by Rogue Brewery ($6) and then finish off your World Series tribute meal with an order of their Cracker Jack ice cream ($10).

Sounds delicious if a little expensive.

Jolly’s Returns as the Dueling Piano Bar, Opens Today

Jolly's Dueling Piano Bar opens today at 3 p.m. (photos courtesy of Jolly's)

Jolly's Dueling Piano Bar opens today at 3 p.m. (photos courtesy of Jolly's)

For nearly a decade, Jolly Weldon has been the king of the Philadelphia piano bar. He first brought the concept to Center City in 2003 with the RedHead Piano Lounge (which was adjacent to his Jolly’s American Bar, on the ground floor of the Latham Hotel). Today, he opens Jolly’s Dueling Piano Bar at 2006 Chestnut Street, with a swanky Mad Men-inspired interior and two dueling baby grand pianos.

A piano bar is nothing without musicians and Jolly’s has two long-time Philadelphia talents tickling the ivories. Anthony “Tony T” DeCarolis and “Wildman Joe” Marchetti have been playing together since 1991 and bring an extensive repertoire with them (by all accounts, they know more than 2,000 songs).

This new venue seats 125, offers a full bar (including a number of specialty cocktails inspired by New Orleans – the home of the piano bar concept) and sports a menu of small plates, developed by Chef Brendan Smith. Jolly’s opens at 3 p.m. today and the music starts promptly at 6 p.m., in celebration of their grand opening. Going forward, they’ll be open Tuesday through Saturday starting at 5 p.m. Music starts at 8 p.m. and goes straight through to closing at 2 a.m. (the kitchen stops serving at midnight).

We’re certain that Jolly’s is quickly going to regain its position as a Center City favorite!

Deal Feed: Three Springs Fruit Farm Apple Sale

three springs bannerWe’ve all heard over the years that buying in bulk can save you money. Typically, those deals are only available at huge buying clubs and warehouse stores. However, from now until the end of apple season, the Three Springs Fruit Farm has got quite the bulk buy deal for you.

Visit their stand at the Headhouse Square Farmers Market on Sunday between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and they’ll let you fill a crate up with apples for just $20 (their honeycrisps are the only exception, those will run you $35 a crate). A crate holds approximately 25 pounds of apples, which means that you’ll pay less than a buck a pound! This is an amazing deal, particularly if you’ve ever paid upwards of $3 a pound for apples.

So get yourself out of bed on Sunday morning and head over to the farmers market. Remember to bring a couple of reusable bags, as while they want you to buy a crate’s worth of apples, they won’t actually let you take their rustic wooden boxes home with you.
