Lucky Old Souls Music Picks of the Week

Monica

Monica McIntyre, performing at the Moonstone Arts Center this Friday

Jazz and more… Where I’ll be and where you should be…

TUESDAY 10/6/09
Lucky Thompson & the Budesa Brothers’ Blue Tuesday Open Mic & Jam Session
Elena’s Soul Showcase Lounge, 4912 Baltimore Ave.
Veteran drummer Lucky Thompson has played with greats like Nina Simone and Patti LaBelle during his long career and led jam sessions all over the city (including at Natalie’s Lounge, where he was the music director for more than 10 years). Lucky and brothers Rich Budesa on keys and Rob Budesa on guitar are doing their part to keep Philly’s great organ trio tradition alive. If you haven’t heard them play at Elena’s, a neighborhood bar with a friendly staff and a welcoming vibe (and great greens and mac & cheese!), then you’re missing out on an essential part of Philly’s jazz scene.
8 p.m., FREE

WEDNESDAY 10/7/09
Ben Schachter’s re:Trio
TIME, 1315 Sansom St.
Tenor sax giant Ben Schachter and his talented young bandmates, bassist Leon Boykins and drummer Matt Scarano, are at TIME every Wednesday night. There’s not a better regularly working band in Philly.
9 p.m., $5

Ellipsis
Tritone, 1508 South St.
Keyboardist John Stenger and drummer Justin Leigh (joined by a rotating cast of friends) have primarily used their monthly Tritone shows to cover entire albums of other people’s music (including Joni Mitchell and Radiohead), but tonight they celebrate the release of their own CD, which features their own original compositions.
9 p.m., $5

THURSDAY 10/8/09
Charles Fambrough Jam Session
The Philadelphia Clef Club, 738 S. Broad St.
I’ve been hearing good things about this new weekly jam session led by former Jazz Messenger, bassist Charles Fambrough.
8 p.m., FREE

FRIDAY 10/9/09
Elliott Levin Trio, Monica McIntyre
Moonstone Arts Center (aka Robin’s Books), 110 S. 13th St., 2nd Floor
This month’s Lucky Old Souls @ Moonstone show features two of Philadelphia’s most singular performers. Saxophonist/flutist Elliott Levin is a Philadelphia icon, instantly recognizable by the lone dreadlock running down his back. He’s played with everyone from Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes to Cecil Taylor, and he’s also a great poet. Joining him tonight are bassist Warren Oree and drummer Greg “Ju-Ju” Jones, both of the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble. Monica McIntyre, a classically trained cellist and singer/songwriter, is a powerful and totally original performer. Her solo performances have an incredible immediacy.
8:30 p.m., $10 ($8 in advance), BYOB

SATURDAY 10/10/09
Tarbaby
Chris’ Jazz Cafe, 1421 Sansom St.
Tarbaby is Orrin Evans on piano, Stacy Dillard on sax, Eric Revis on bass, and Nasheet Waits on drums; it’s a band that’s not to be missed.
8 & 10 p.m., $20

SUNDAY 10/11/09
LaRose Jam Session
LaRose Social Club, 5531 Germantown Ave.
Another new weekly jam session, this one led by drummer Rob Henderson. From what I hear, Orrin Evans and bassist Mike Boone were in the house the last couple of weeks.
7 p.m., $5
