Last Wednesday, October 14th, the Kimmel Center began offering free tours of the “Grand Old Lady of Locust Street,” aka the Academy of Music.
Tours can be booked by reservation, and happen on select dates at 11:30AM. Experienced volunteers take guests on hour long tours of the Academy, detailing the building’s history and showing off it’s gorgeous interior. Highlights of the tour include:
- A behind-the-scenes look at the Green Room.
- A walk through the ambulatory to the Grand Lobby with its center chandelier.
- The Academy’s lavish Ballroom with original paint colors, French style rug design and replicas of the original teardrop crystal chandeliers.
- The baroque style Auditorium, built as a “Temple of Music” and illuminated by the dazzling crystal Chandelier, recently restored to its original glory.
There are a lot of other free tours at the Kimmel Center, including their Building & Theatre Tours (Tues – Sun, 1PM) and their Art & Architecture Tours (Saturdays at 10:30AM). To learn more about these, please visit the Kimmel Center’s official website.
