It’s really hard to picture a Halloween without vampires, especially when we’re talking about Halloween in Philadelphia. With all the Dracula related events the Rosenbach Museum & Library throw, from manuscript readings to an awesome Dracula Festival with Spiral Q, they’re managed to make celebrating this famous horrific blood-sucker a Philadelphia Halloween tradition. And they aren’t the only ones.
The Traverse Arts Project will bring Nosferatu, the classic German vampire horror film based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, to the First Unitarian Church for it’s second annual screening. This year’s screening features T. Desiree Hines, an organist who will perform alongside the screening, creating an even more captivating and frightening experience. You might have heard of Hines, she had an incredible cover story in the City Paper back in May.
The best part? While you’re being scared out of your wits, you’re actually doing something good for the community. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Festivale: The 2nd Annual Philadelphia International GLBT Arts Festival. Tickets are only $10 a person, $5 for students and seniors, with a showing at 7PM and 11PM. For more information, visit Traverse’s official website.

Want to look and walk like a star? Look no further than Rittenhouse Square’s Tip Toe shoe boutique, where Philadelphia-born R&B songstress Jill Scott finds her favorite heels when she’s in town. Don’t even bother trying to window shop at this charming store, which contains every style of shoe you can imagine. You won’t be able to resist trying something on. It was all I could do to not to slip into a pair of buttery leather heels or try on one of their towering wedges.
Recently named Best Women’s Shoes in Philadelphia by MyFoxPhilly’s Best of Philly Hotlist, Tip Toe boasts an impressive array of flats, heels, wedges and boots in a variety of styles and colors. The boutique offers shoes from Paris, Spain and Italy – as well as the new Pour La Victoire – a five-inch heel collection made in Brazil and designed with French aesthetics that are both stylish and comfortable.
Tip Toe, which was opened two years ago by proprietress Monique Rice, offers two floors of shoes as well as a variety of jewelry and clothing. The airy, bi-level loft, has walls lined with framed shoe prints and features a friendly staff that can tell you everything you need to know about the ABC’s of shoe styling. If you’re looking for style and quality, Tip Toe is the place to go. And why wouldn’t you go the best shoe store in Philly? Go. Your feet will thank you.

The Philly Cheesesteak concession inside Yankee Stadium (All photos by Robyn Lee, courtesy of Serious Eats New York)
Yes, we’re giving away free Philly Cheesesteaks to Phillies fans today/tonight before the game at Shorty’s Steaks up in New York City.
And while that is surely a great promotion, this piece of news might even be a little bit better/juicier: they’re is a Philly Cheesesteak concession stand (Carl’s Steaks, top photo) inside Yankee Stadium AND the Philly Cheesesteaks from that concession stand are sometimes served to Yankees players before games as the team’s pregame meal, (as reported by Bloomberg today).
So hopefully that gives the Phillies some kind of good karma advantage — that the Yankees not only have a prominent stadium concession (Section 107) devoted entirely to a classic and essential Philadelphia food staple, BUT ALSO that the Yankee players actually get their nourishment from said Philly Cheesesteaks before some home games at Yankee Stadium…
That’s a coup for Philly! And our cheesesteaks.

Phillies confections from Whipped Bakeshop (Photos courtesy of Z. Lukas)
Earlier in the week, we featured some of the Phillies-themed confections that area bakeries are offering as a way to celebrate our boys in red and white. We got an email late yesterday from our friends at Whipped Bakeshop (after operating out of borrowed and rented commercial kitchens for the last couple of years, they finally have some swanky new digs all their own in Fishtown) saying that they too are selling Phillies cupcakes right out of the case.
They come in chocolate or vanilla buttermilk and are frosted with vanilla buttercream and topped with a Phillies logo “P” in red and a blue star. At $3 a pop, they are a little pricier than some of the other options around town, but having had the opportunity to snack on cupcakes from Whipped Bakeshop on multiple occasions, I can promise that they are worth the price.

A still from the Percy Street documentary, by filmmaker Chandler Kauffman.
With Percy Street Barbeque opening on South Street in a few weeks, the restaurant’s owners (Michael Solomonov and Steve Cook, also of Zahav and Xochitl) and chefs (including Marigold Kitchen alum Erin O’Shea) took a trip down to Texas to try some authentic barbeque and brisket.
They put a pretty amazing video documentary together, which you can watch here:
“It makes sense to us,” said Chef Solomonov, who we interviewed for our With Love Letters series. “If we’re going to open a Texas-inspired barbeque restaurant, (we should) send a bunch of us to Texas to go eat. That’s the basis for our quality control and for our standards.”
We can’t wait to taste the fruit of your research.

If you still haven’t caught The Arden’s production of The History Boys you still have a few days to do so before it closes on November 1st. But if you have to miss it, don’t despair: the Old City theater is following it up with another masterpiece of modern drama that opened just last week.
Rabbit Hole won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, with Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon in the lead. Now the character is played by Philly native and Arden veteran Grace Gonglewski, as it tells the heartbreaking yet humorous story of a suburban family that sees its life go from Heaven to Hell, and is struggling to pull itself out of a whirlwind of crisis and grief. It’s a lot funnier than it sounds, promise.
The show is for mature audiences. Go get your theatre on!
