Saturday: Zombie Drink Specials @ the Rum Bar

Luckily for us, Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, granting everyone the opportunity to stay out late and party it up. Adam Kanter, the owner and mixologist at Rum Bar, is fully aware of this fact, and plans to “make the most of this special night” with his signature Zombie cocktails this Saturday.

The cocktails are custom created just for this event, and he’ll be selling these delicious concoctions [three rum varieties mixed with pineapple juice, passion fruit and lemon juice, topped with a float of 151-proof rum, yum!] for just $6, and only $3 is you’re dressed up for the occasion! Worried about having a proper costume? Adam’s hired a makeup artist to help guests look as undead as possible.

With cheap drinks, make-up artists at the bar, and DJ Na:Tev spinning through out the night, Rum Bar definitely looks like a great place to spend Halloween night.

Lately I’ve been highlighting a lot of events, festivals, and trick-or-treat opportunities. One thing distinctly missing however, are Halloween drink specials around town! Know of any others? Email me a tip or Tweet at me.

Well, we want you to prove it.

Do you consider yourself a Phillies Superfan? If so, e-mail us at iknow(at)uwishunu(dot)com, including in the e-mail:

- A short (200 words or fewer) description of what makes you a Phillies Superfan

- A photo of yourself, preferably in Phillies duds

The winning Superfans will be profiled right here on uwishunu.

So if you’ve painted your car Phillies Red, watched every single game this year (including pre-season!), named your dog Utley, or done anything else in the realm of Phillies phanaticism, drop us a line! You could be famous.

Phillies Fever: CNN World Series Poll Reveals The Phillies To Be More Liked Than The Yankees

cnn-world-series-poll-2uwThe Quick Vote poll on CNN.com today asks:

“Which team do you want to win the World Series?”

So far, more than 230,000 people have responded.

And the overwhelming majority of respondents — 64 percent — want the Phillies to win.

Of course, the poll is not scientific so you can’t put too much weight on it.

However, it is great to see people outside Philadelphia finding this Phillies team as likable as people in Philadelphia find it.

GO PHILLIES!

A Look Inside Pizzeria Stella, Stephen Starr’s New Neighborhood Pizzeria in Society Hill

(Photos courtesy of Pizzeria Stella)

Three views of Stella including a shot of the Margherita Pie (Photos courtesy of Pizzeria Stella)

OVERVIEW

Pizzeria Stella is the brand new pizzeria that Stephen Starr opened less than a month ago on Headhouse Square in Society Hill.

Located on the northwest corner of 2nd & Lombard Streets, Pizzeria Stella serves twelve signature wood-fired pizzas that they are calling “a cross between classic Neapolitan and New York style pizza” as well as meats, salads and antipasti.

The setting is laid-back and relaxed — this is intended to be fun and casual neighborhood restaurant that you can frequent without worrying about breaking the bank.

THE PIZZA

The twelve pizza varieties range from the traditional like the Margherita with san marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil, and fresh basil to signature pies such as Sausage with sweet fennel sausage, hot peppers, garlic, and fresh basil; the Vongole with clams, guanciale and broccoli rabe; the San Daniele with prosciutto, smoked mozzarella, baby arugula, and ricotta salata; and the Tartufo with black truffle, fontina cheese, egg and parmesan.

THE OVEN

Stella features a large open kitchen where the pizzas are prepared and then cooked in a custom built wood-burning oven that can reach temperatures greater than 800 degrees.

The large oven is actually the focal point of the main dining room at Stella. There’s also counter seating that gives you an even better view of the pizzas as they go into and come out of the oven.

Note: if you’re really into pizza, you will like these “front row” seats at the countertop bar — the pizza-making scene can be a little entrancing.

WINE & BEER

Stella complements their pizzas with a small but creative wine list, featuring a good selection of affordable, pizza-friendly Italian varietals available by both the glass and by the bottle.

Additional beverages include a selection of beers (including Yuengling Lager, Birra Moretti, Dogfish Head Brown Ale, and Lagunitas IPA to name a few) as well as non-alcoholic specialty sodas such as Birch Beer, Cherry Cream and house-made lemonade.

SALADS & ANTIPASTI

In addition to pizza, Stella also has a variety of salads such as: Grilled Radicchio with gorgonzola, raisins, onion and balsamic vinegar; Roasted Beet and Arugula with blood orange and extra virgin olive oil; and Romaine with romaine heart, cucumbers, cherry tomato and mint.

Antipasti selections include Octopus and Calamari with olives, new potatoes and red onions and Asparagus with a sunny side up egg, ricotta salata and extra virgin olive oil.

The selection of sliced, cured meats includes prosciutto di parma, coppa, and hot sopressatta.

For dessert, Pizzeria Stella will offer a selection of house-made gelato (below).

THE DESIGN

With concrete floors and steel beams, Pizzeria Stella’s interior blends industrial elements with Italian accents such as wood paneling, postcards of Pisa and Chianti bottles lining the walls.

Sitting behind a carrera marble countertop bar, the wood-burning oven is covered mosaic-style with white tile and red “Stella” lettering.

Oversized ceiling fans hang above the main dining area, which is filled with a mixture of slate-top tables and large family-style tables made of reclaimed wood from the Coney Island boardwalk.

Stella has seating for 75 in its main dining room. And during warm weather, Stella will be able to accommodate 40 more guests al fresco under their striped awnings.

THE MENU

After the jump, we have the full 12-pizza menu.

Phillies Fever: The Phanatic and Mayor Nutter Get Their Pep Rally on at City Hall; Contest to Win World Series Tickets Announced

Hundreds of Phillies fans flooded City Hall’s Dilworth Plaza today for the Phillies’ official World Series pep rally.

It was quite a feast for the eyes and ears: Rally towels were waving, fans were cheering and elected officials were dancing, all under the watchful gaze of William Penn.

The Phillie Phanatic: Often imitated, never equaled.

The Phillie Phanatic: Often imitated, never equaled.

One of the first, and most loudly cheered for, speakers was former Phillies catcher Darren Daulton. “There’s a stigma about Philadelphia,” he said. “Is it the weather? No. Is it the stadium? No. It’s the fans.” (Loud cheering from us.) “There’s two powerhouses going at it this week,” he continued, “And I think it’s the fans who can rattle the other team.” We’ll do our best, Dutch!

Fans of all ages, shapes and decibel levels showed up to cheer for the Fightins.

Mayor Michael Nutter, bounding onto the stage a few minutes later, announced a contest to win a pair of tickets to a World Series game:

Send an email to: phillymayor(at)gmail(dot)com, including your name, address and phone number (the Mayor did not specify a subject line, but something along the lines of “Phillies Ticket Contest” seems rational). Winners will receive a pair of tickets to at least one World Series game at Citizens Bank Park. (Good luck!)

Moving on, the Mayor introduced a guy who represents Philadelphia better than anybody. “He’s kind of wild, kind of zany,” he began, “The greatest team mascot in the United States of America, the Phillie Phanatic!”

The pep rally concluded with a sing-along of “High Hopes,” late broadcaster Harry Kalas’ signature anthem, followed by “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” sung by Mayor Nutter, the Phanatic (well, he danced rather than sang), the Phillies Ballgirls and Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro, Jr.

Thanks for showing us the team-spirit ropes, guys. Now, let’s put it to good use. BEAT THE YANKEES! Let’s show ‘em how we do in Philadelphia.

Friday: Day of the Dead Dance Party at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

PMA-MusicNight2-B.Krist_uw

Hispanic Heritage Month may be over, but Philly has much more to offer throughout the year.

The Day of the Dead (observed on November 1st) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Latinos living in the United States. Though it’s not the most upbeat holiday, the day focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have passed away, often with elaborate feasts.

On Friday, October 30, the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Art After 5 presents a special evening of music in celebration of Hispanic heritage. The Day of the Dead Dance Party will feature Brooklyn-based party band Cumbiagra, whose music celebrates the lively cumbia form of music that started in Colombia in the 50′s, slowly spreading to Mexico, Peru and Argentina and eventually worldwide.

While you’re enjoying the vibrant sounds of the band, the Day of the Dead event will also include spooky art tours, face painting, costume contest and fortune tellers.

If you wake up the next day feeling inspired, make sure to stop by Xochitl’s and try their Dia de los Muertos menu. The four-course prix-fixe dinner for just $35 per person has become an annual tradition thanks to Chef Dionicio Jimenez.

Phillies-Themed Baked Goods: Cupcakes, Cookies and More

Phillies-themed cupcakes and cookies (photos by M. McClellan)

Phillies-themed cupcakes and cookies (photos by M. McClellan)

Looking for a way to celebrate the Phillies NLCS win and subsequent trip to the World Series that doesn’t involve greased lamp posts and a massive hangover? May we suggest a nice red-and-white cupcake instead!

Bakeries all over town are doing their part to keep the fan fervor going by producing a number of Phillies-themed cupcakes, cookies, cakes and more.

At Isgro (1009 Christian Street), the Italian Market’s oldest pastry shop, options range from a basic cupcake to full-on cakes, with stops in between for larger cupcakes scaled for sharing and cookies the size of sandwich plate (pictured above, right).

Termini Brothers (multiple locations) is sticking with a standard cupcake in either chocolate or vanilla (pictured above, left). At $2 a pop, they’re one of the more affordable options.

victorino isgro

Flying Monkey Patisserie is offering a few different Phillies cupcake options, get to the Reading Terminal Market location early for the best selection. One warning though, these cupcakes are made with a pound cake base, so they’re denser than your average ‘cake (at $5 a piece, they’re also pricier than the others we sampled).

Still hungry for more? The Swiss Haus (35 S. 19th Street) is offering chocolate and vanilla cupcakes frosted with the Phillies signature “P” for just $1.75. Naked Chocolate Cafe can customize chocolate baseball bats with a special “Go Phils!” A special order is required, so plan accordingly. The Pink Rose Pastry Shop has Phillies cupcakes in red velvet, carrot and Boston Creme. For those of you who want something outside the cupcake box, consider the hand-painted and piped Phillies cookies from the Whipped Bakeshop.
