Spotlight: Headhouse Square Farmers Market (Sundays!)

Sundays through December, 10 am - 2 pm (All photos by M. McClellan)
In years past, farmers markets were reserved for fair, summer days. They were thought of a supplements to weekly trips to conventional grocery stores and nothing more. However, in recent days, more and more people have come to prefer food purchased directly from those who grew and raised it. Happily, farmers markets have expanded their reach in order to accommodate this trend.

Here in Philadelphia, our flagship farmers market is the one held on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Headhouse Square. This year, the market will run straight up until December 20th, making it possible to eat complete farmers market meals through to 2010.

Right now, there is an abundance of produce, meats, dairy and bakery items available at the Headhouse market. You can even reserve a heritage turkey for your Thanksgiving celebration now, finally setting to rest the concern as to whether your grocery store bird will defrost in time for dinner.
Also, make sure to check out the specialty items, like the goats milk products from Patches of Star Dairy, the handmade blue cheese from Birchrun Hill Farms and the amazing Market Day caneles.

The Headhouse Square Farmers Market is run by The Food Trust, an organization that runs a number of other markets around the city. If you can’t get down to Society Hill on Sunday mornings, make sure to check out their other market options (Farm to City also coordinates a number of excellent markets around the city if The Food Trust doesn’t offer one near you).
Additionally, if shopping in the open air just isn’t your thing, make sure to check out the newly expanded Fair Food Farmstand at Reading Terminal Market.
