This Weekend’s Top Halloween Picks Around Town

As you know, this weekend is packed with awesome Halloween activities, so to help guide you through all of the action, we’ve compiled our top picks.

Terror Behind the Walls at Eastern State Penitentiary
Although Terror Behind the Walls is open through November 7th, what better time than Halloween to visit AOL’s top haunted house in America? Already pretty spooky during the day, at night the historic prison transforms into a haunted haven like no other. Check out one Washington Post writer’s recap of a recent trip to Eastern State.
Haunted Poe
This weekend, Brat Productions’ Haunted Poe wraps up its unique production which combines theater, literature, illusion and all the elements of a terrifying haunted house. A revived Edgar Allen Poe leads guests through a retelling of 11 of his famous works and promises a thrilling and bone-chilling experience.
Ghost Tour of Philadelphia and Spirits of ’76 Ghost Tours
Philadelphia is home to two great ghost tours (Spirits of ’76 and the Ghost Tour of Philadelphia) and for Halloween, both have added extra times to their normal schedule. Check out Philly’s spookiest spots and neighborhoods, while guides relay chilling tales of the city’s creepiest characters.

Hayrides to the Witches House at Linvilla Orchards
Friday evening is your last chance to take the trip to the famous witches house at Linvilla Orchards. More fun than fright, the family-friendly hayride is full of jokes and stories and concludes with marshmallows and cider around the campfire.
Thriller Dance Party at Society Hill Dance Academy
Who knew dancing and Halloween went hand-in-hand? Well, Michael Jackson and The Society Hill Dance Academy, for starters. The dance academy team will be hosting its popular Thriller dance class from 8:30 to 9:30 pm, and is open to the public. Perfect timing for your Saturday night Halloween party!
Second Annual Nosferatu Screening at the First Unitarian Church
If your nerves can handle it, head to the First Unitarian Church for a screening of the classic German vampire flick, Nosferatu. This year’s showing is accompanied by the spooks sounds of an organ (hands down the most frightening instrument) as played by the renown, T. Desiree Hines.
Day of the Dead Dance Party at the Philadelphia Museum of Art
Part of the museum’s Art after Five series, this Friday’s event promises to be a little different than the rest. Spooky art tours and tarot card readings are scheduled along with face painting and a costume contest, with Brooklyn-based party band Cumbiagra providing the musical entertainment.

Halloween at Franklin Square
Saturday, Franklin Square comes alive with family-friendly Halloween activity! Kids are encouraged to arrive in costume and hit the Trick-or-Treat trail after they finish designing their very own bag. The Lightning Bolt Express will be in service all afternoon and once the Sun sets, it’s time for Spooky Mini-Golf!
Rittenhouse Row Halloween Celebration
Rittenhouse Row’s celebration is truly an all-day affair. Beginning at 10 am, the shops of Rittenhouse Square will be handing out Halloween treats to eager trick-or-treaters. At noon, head to Liberty Place for a costume contest complete with judges, stage and great prizes. From 2 pm to 4 pm the action is at G Lounge for the Annual Children’s Party. And you still have an hour left more trick-or-treating.
Halloween at the Please Touch Museum
The Please Touch Museum is hosting a Halloween extravaganza geared towards the youngest of trick-or-treaters, all day. Children and adults are encouraged to wear their costumes (and receive $1.50 admission) and trick-or-treat throughout the museum, participate in art activities and enjoy a Halloween puppet show.
Follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Kimmel Center
Dress up the kids and ease on down Broad Street for some tricks, treats, and tickets at the Kimmel! From noon to 4 pm, Broad Street will be full of Halloween fun including pumpkin decorating, jugglers, candy and even $31 ticket specials from the Kimmel Center.
Fright of Fancy: Halloween Dance Party & Costume Show at Fabric Horse
Northern Liberties boutique Fabric Horse is hosting a Halloween dance party and fashion show. The evening will showcase custom made costumes and feature games, prizes, and performances from “the best and brightest of the Philadelphia art scene”.
Halloween in New Hope
The Halloween action begins at noon with the New Hope Pumpkinfest Costume Contest, which will be awarding the best costumes in several different categories (even Best Dressed Pet!). At 3 pm, New Hope’s business open up for an afternoon of trick-or-treating and throughout the day there will be face painting, pumpkin bowling, pumpkin decorating and even a pumpkin pie eating contest!
Halloween Celebration at Smith’s Playground
Smith’s Playground is celebrating Halloween with a free event with face painting, an obstacle course and a Halloween costume party. Saturday also happens to be the last day of Smith’s playground season, so you take advantage of one last day of outdoor fun at the playground.
Yellow Fever 1793 Tours
Brush up on your Philadelphia Yellow Fever Epidemic history this weekend with this 20-minute tour through the cemetery where many of the victims are buried. Yikes!
