Brunch at Pub & Kitchen

Brunch at Pub & Kitchen (photos by M. McClellan)
Pub & Kitchen has been happily hunkered down on the southeast corner of 20th and Lombard for going on two years now (for those of you with long memories, it’s in the space formerly occupied by Chaucers). A gastropub of the first order, their dinner menu is solid and comfy, decked out with great burgers and even better specials (the truffled lobster BLT springs to mind as a particular standout). The beer selection is top notch and the bar is just the sort of long, polished expanse that makes you want to settle down and watch a game.

Knowing all that about P&K, I headed over one recent Saturday morning, to see if the newly revamped brunch menu could equal their evening experience. Walking in at 11 a.m., just as they open for brunch service, the restaurant was sun-drenched and there were a number of unoccupied tables (a pleasant change from some of the other brunch destinations around town, where the waits can span hours). We were seated quickly and soon had menus in hand, along with coffee (good, fragrant, strong) and water.

My dining companion and I ordered up the beans on toast (topped with a fried egg and paired with a fat sausage link and two oysters), the french toast (comes with a ramekin of berry compote and a boat of Mrs. Butterworth’s) and the house-cured salmon platter (served with a fennel pretzel from Metropolitan bakery, onions, tomatoes and plenty of capers).
The beans on toast dish was the table favorite, but everything was absolutely delicious. The service was attentive and by the time we rolled ourselves away from the table, the restaurant had filled up nicely and was buzzing with happy diners.

Pub & Kitchen serves brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. I’m already planning my next visit. You should be too.

I wish Chaucer’s was still there. The food was consistently good, and the drinks were reasonably priced. Unlike Pub and Kitchen.
